Hello, 🌻 I find it sadly ironic that the month of March was named for the Roman god of war — Mars. This was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter. While this is not a political column, I hope we do what we can, if only a prayer, for the brave people of Ukraine. They are heroes united in one cause –– to keep freedom and democracy alive in their country.

While no one in my family is Irish, I did have a cousin who married an Irishman, so that gives me some leeway to write a bit of blarney about St. Patrick’s Day.Do you know that St. Patrick was born in Britain as Maewan Succat? No wonder he changed his name to Patrick.Did he drive out all the snakes from Ireland?  That all depends upon what you refer to as snakes. If it’s the reptiles, probably not, since snakes weren’t native to Ireland. The legend, St. Pat used the three-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity in his teaching is most likely just a legend. Wear a shamrock anyway –– it’s a good legend.Blue was originally associated with the holiday, but green is now the color of the day. It’s the traditional day for planting peas and cabbage, however, according to folk lore, you need to sow the seeds while wearing your nightclothes. If you sleep in the buff, I don’t know what to tell you. Take your chances or plant kale.A few years back I had my first and last straight shots of Irish Whiskey after which I discovered ––“You’re now aware you can’t say ‘Irish Wristwatch.’”I’ll end this piece of unauthorized blarney with my very favorite Irish saying. “May God bless and keep in good health your enemies’ enemies.”If any of the above is not correct, I’m not responsible. The leprechauns made me do it. Cheers!

While never interested in politics, I have suddenly developed a perverse appetite for some of our political /media personalities. I am fascinated with quite a few of these subtle thinkers who have opened a whole new universe to me — kind of like, “The Twilight Zone.” I find myself nostalgic for some of the old, simple American virtues: knowledge, skepticism and sanity.                                                                                                     — Nancy

Monday, March 20 –– the day of the March Equinox, also called the vernal or spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For those fortunate enough not to have suffered through several grueling years learning Latin, the word equinox …

Stories Your Shelter Cat Could Tell You

By: T. J. Banks

Your rescue cat’s story didn’t begin at the shelter. No, your cat’s story began long before you met him/her there. It started off with family members or the local animal control depositing a beloved pet at the nearest shelter after the owner’s death. Or with the previous owner deciding that his/her behavioral issues were too much to deal with, as a friend found out when her Persian came to her declawed…and with a black silk falcon hood that Previous Owner put on his head because “he nipped.”

These scenarios and others have an emotional impact on shelter cats. Animals “experience trauma just like people do,” observes Maria Stoerrle, the outreach director at the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter.

Growing Your Own Avocado Tree — From Seed in Water

Next time you use an avocado, try growing your own avocado plant. It’s fun and an easy, free way to add to your indoor plant collection. When cutting your avocado, be sure you don’t cut into the pit. Wash the pit with water and allow it to dry for 2—3 days.

Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese

Soup and a sandwich — everyone loves it. In my home, the Saturday requested combo was grilled cheese and tomato soup. No alternatives allowed. I have never been able to replicate my Aunt Mary’s tomato soup, but this easy one was always a hit with my gang.

Another Hilarious Book From Linda

Cats in therapy? Really? Aren’t cats the most serene, laid-back creatures on earth? Don’t they just lie around, zoom for two hours, eat a little, kill a catnip mouse, then go back to lying around? Alas, no. They are complicated, even fragile creatures.
