IRTENNNVOME

Hello,

Here we are, the season of melodious bird songs, flowers in bloom and baby wildlife showing up in my yard. My honeysuckle vine is in full bloom and my feeder has been out but no sign of hummingbirds — until last night. I sat on the back deck and saw a flash of green going from blossom to blossom. He’s back!

The wren house is up waiting for their arrival but no sign of them yet. Weather conditions have made it hard on these tiny travelers.
Sadly, the bees did not survive the winter, so Roberta brought two new colonies for the hives.
They seem to have made themselves at home in spite of the radical warm/cold, sun/rain season we’re having.
The wildflower garden looks dense but is not in bloom yet. Hopefully I have it right and the blossoms should serve the bees and the insects and seeds should feed the birds.
I began a milkweed patch for the monarch butterflies — I find it hard to believe I’m paying for plants that used to be along every country road years ago. Such is progress, I guess.
Before I forget, a happy Father’s Day to all the dads and those who may not be a dad but served as a guiding compass in your life.
Enjoy the natural world around you —see you in July.

Cheers,

Everyone is a friend to another

Not Your Noah’s Ark

The mere thought of getting a cat or dog safely from one state to another can be daunting enough.  Try imagining providing easier transport, quarantine, and safe haven for such international travelers as capybaras, elephants, and Icelandic horses.

The Nine Most Important Things to Know About Bird Song
Songbirds Have the Chops

Songbirds learn their songs and perform them using a specialized voice box called a syrinx. Vocally, they’re in a league of their own.

These adaptations have been remarkably successful - songbirds make up almost half of the world’s 10,000 bird species including warblers, thrushes, and sparrows. The vast majority of non-songbird species make simpler sounds that are instinctual rather than learned.

A Mysterious Phenomena

Thomas Jefferson was our President the last time a rare occurrence of a trillion cicadas emerged from their underground life after which it will be another 221 years before these groups appear together again.

The Strawberry Moon - June 21

This June full moon is unique. Around every 20 years, the Strawberry Moon coincides with the summer solstice, which is on June 20.

During the summer solstice the Sun is highest up and because the moon is always opposite the Sun, this year you will see that the Moon is 10 widths lower on the horizon than the Sun ever is. If you’re awake after midnight, you will see how very low the Moon is. It won’t happen again for another 18 years!

Cicadas’ intermittent emergence cycles are among the most mysterious phenomena in the insect world — one which scientists still don’t truly understand. A trillion of these bugs emerging en masse is the latest rare, natural wonder to capture public interest. Like the recent solar eclipse and the Northern Lights in the United States, such natural phenomena can, for a brief time, take us away from the “everyday noise” and allow us to feel awe-struck with something bigger than ourselves. Perhaps it’s this sense of awe, we seem to be missing in our lives, that will prompt people to pay attention and protect the wonders of our natural world.
Perhaps.
