Join Me May 24 — It’s National Road Trip Day 🛣️🚗🚐🌄

Hello Friends,

When I saw National Road Trip Day on the calendar, it brought back some road trip memories of years ago. Many Sunday afternoons, weather permitting, my Uncle Hans would say, “Time for an exploring trip.”

We would pack a simple lunch and pile into the car heading for some mysterious destination he had selected. I always took my Brownie Hawkeye camera — in later years I acquired a more sophisticated camera — and sometimes we’d take Nibby, our cocker spaniel with us.

These “trips” were always on the back winding small roads in Connecticut and sometimes New York. Pawling, NY was one destination with the historic homes on Quaker Hill and massive equestrian farms plus “gentlemen farms” scattered through the area. Kent, CT with its park and beautiful Kent Falls.

Many times, we’d just explore small roads around Candlewood Lake — areas which were still not developed. Lakes were always a favorite — Lake Waramaug comes to mind. It was so tranquil — no power boats allowed.

Our “trips” were always over in time for dinner. I fondly recall as we would pull into our driveway we would always say, “There’s no place like home.”

PS Have a happy, safe Memorial Day. Take a moment to remember the true meaning of the day. Let us never forget those who served.

ROAD TRIP TRIVIA

Established in 2019 by Pilot Flying J, a truck stop company, this holiday was crafted to spotlight their travel centers and mobile app. Pilot Flying J noted a 15% uptick in food and gasoline sales on the Friday before Memorial Day, and hence, this observation led to the creation of the official National Road Trip Day.
