There’s a time for everyone, if they only learn, that the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn.  — Elton John

🎇SPECIAL NEW YEAR EDITION🎇

Hello Friends,

It was easy in ‘23 to feel overburdened. Our attentions were bombarded with all that is undesirable in human activity — wars, bigotry, brutality, and the despoiling of our earth.

Humans will somehow resolve their self-inflected man-made problems, for better or worse.

BUT NATURE IS BROKEN.

Our natural world is in visible flux and hubris has given us a burning planet. The flora and fauna who share this earth with us can’t correct what we have done.

Nature — nature depends on us. So far, we have done a dismal job.

There is a New Year tradition that says, “The first bird you see on the first day of the New Year sets the tone for your year ahead.”

Of course, the first bird I saw was my ever-faithful crow who patiently waits for me each morning to toss him scraps from cat food not eaten or tidbits from dinner. He is not a pretty bird by any means, but I respect him for his ingenuity, his wonderful display of parenting, plus he is super smart. Do you know a crow’s brain body ratio is larger than ours?

Spiritually, crows represent transformation, positive change, and intelligence. Seeing a crow is generally considered to be a good omen. Temporary and unexpected changes are coming, but the outcome will be positive.

I take hope in that “crow prediction,” because the task of improving our natural world may seem overwhelming — but it isn’t.

RESOLVE ABOUT SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF

What if, instead of making selfish milquetoast New Year resolutions, we make a sold commitment. It doesn’t have to be a big one — it can be one small one, “bird by bird” every day.

  • Make one little corner of your yard a natural habitat.

  • Pay attention to recycle.

  • Walk or bike instead of getting into the car for a short sprint.

  • Help our songbirds.

  • The list goes on.

  • We all know what it takes.

EVERY SMALL STEP ADDS UP.

My resolution for this monthly newsletter is to “dig deeper” and bring you more diverse monthly information to help us help our earth.

HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

LET’S MAKE ’24 OUR YEAR TO SHOW WE LOVED BEYOND OURSELVES ENOUGH TO CARE.

This is a piece that was sent to me years ago for NORTH FORK COUNTRY, a monthly publication Bob and I published.

I never become tired of it as a New Year reminder.

THE GIFT: IMAGINE THERE IS A BANK THAT CREDITS YOUR ACCOUNT EACH MORNING WITH $86,400.

It carries over no balance from day to day.

Every “evening” deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use.

During the day, what would you do?

Draw out every cent, of course.

Each of us has such a “bank”.

Its name is TIME.

Every morning, it credits you 86,400 seconds.

Every night it writes off as lost, whatever of this you failed to invest toward a good purpose.

It carries over no balance.

It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you.

Each night it burns the remains of the day.

If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no drawing against "tomorrow".

You must live in the present on today's deposits.

Invest it to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success.

The clock is running.

Make the most of today.

Yesterday is history.

Tomorrow is a mystery.

Today is a gift.
